Monk slowly recovers but cannot recall any of his memory. He does have one visitor - a police detective named Runcorn, who tells the man his name is William Monk, and that before the accident he was also a police detective. It turns out he has been there three weeks after his carriage overturned, but he has no memory of the accident or anything about himself. Circa 1860, a mysterious, anonymous man awakens in pain in a terrible place - a jail? The workhouse? It turns out he is in a horrible Victorian hospital, and he does not know his own name, nor how he came to be there. The Face of a Stranger is the first in the series, and it grabbed me right away. I was looking for a good neo-Victorian mystery when Perry's Inspector Monk series was recommended. But in the nicest possible way, because now I am completely hooked on Anne Perry. To Didi and Sherrie, my librarian friends: I thank you, and silently curse you. How did it take me so long to read Anne Perry?

Production of these wood pellets for export to Europe and Asia has drastically increased in the past decade, raising concerns about potential harm to biodiversity since many species in the forests sourcing pellet production were already at risk prior to the development of this new commodity. We test the proposed framework through application to gopher tortoise ( Gopherus polyphemus), a keystone species that is the focus of conservation efforts across the southeastern region of United States of America, where wood pellets are being produced for bioenergy. We propose a simple analysis framework to examine critical intersections between land-management choices and the life-history conditions of selected species of concern, thereby facilitating the identification of mitigation practices that can reduce negative impacts on species at risk. Land-management choices made for economic and societal gains intrinsically influence landscapes and species that are dependent upon them. The term ‘other readers’ is defined as:Ģ. Livy (Titus Livius), the great Roman historian, was born at or near Patavium (Padua) in 64 or 59 BCE he may have lived mostly in Rome but died at Patavium, in 12 or 17 CE. The digital Loeb Classical Library extends the founding mission of James Loeb with an interconnected, fully searchable, perpetually growing virtual library of all that is important in Greek and Latin literature. (A "tooter," says Aunt Rosie, to keep him from becoming an "ignoramiss.") And it could be a worse fate than David ever imagined, maybe even worse than Rittenhouse: his stern, elderly Aunt Annie volunteers for the job. McKelvie (who, incidentally, calls David "laddie-buck").īut mild exercise turns out to include more than lounging around reading books about pirates, sneaking into theaters to see "the new films that actually talk" (this being right before the Depression), and writing up clever cartoons about the "Sea-Fox," the devilishly devious scourge of the Spanish Main. David (also known as "Bax," "Skeezix," "Skinamalink," Snicklefritz," and "First Sergeant," depending on which grownup is doing the addressing) decides that he'd be more than happy to wile away his days with some fresh air and "mild exercise," as prescribed by Dr. ("New Monia," as his Aunt Rosie called it with her heavy British accent, not unlike the "Spanish Influenzo.") But all that bed rest would have been worth it if it meant he could escape Rittenhouse Academy and continue on among the rogues' gallery of eccentric friends and relatives that passes through his family's Philadelphia home. Eleven-year-old David nearly died of pneumonia. Similarly, leaders can ask everyone to identify the most significant contribution each member makes and suggest one area for improvement. Members can be asked to answer some non-intrusive personal questions that help the team establish a personal report. There are a few simple tools that can be used to build trust.Politics is the result of ambiguity on collective goals, which makes it easy for members to focus on their individual success only. A team is political when its members act based on how others respond instead of based on their convictions.Trust allows the team to leverage each other's skills and focus on work without worry about motives. Great teams comfortably share weaknesses and skill deficiencies and ask for help. The first dysfunction is a lack of trust caused by team members' failure to understand and open up to each other.Patrick Lencioni, who has coached hundreds of CEOs and Fortune 500 companies' crews, presents a powerful model to overcome The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and build world-class teams.įor example, learn a story of a CEO who completely reorganized a broken executive team of a high-profile Silicon Valley firm, discover powerful insights and build world-class teams. But nearly every organization struggles with teams mired in organizational politics. If you can get everyone in an organization to move in the same direction, you can dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, anytime. My brothers and I look between each other, a small nod passing between us. I spin around, biting on the skin between my thumb and pointer finger. “But why the fuck would she do that?” Royce rushes out. She went fucking easy from what I heard, but-” “Raven rushed her, got in her face, smacked her around a bit. He nods, his eyes dropping to the floor, and when they pop up, they’re focused. We knew you would come straight to us if there was something needing said. And the fact that you just came in here and told us, means now you have a reason to talk about it. There’re some things that don’t need to be said, Cap, and there’s nothing wrong with that. “Man, this is different, and you know it. Would have expected nothing less.”Ĭaptain looks to me like he’s ashamed and I shake my head. “For real, though, brother.” Royce goes in for a bro hug and handshake. “You told us when you were piss drunk, said you couldn’t hide anything from us.” Royce smirks. He hesitates a minute, running his hand over the back of his head. It made me a fan for life and a lot of that magic that reeled me in was the blessing of watching one of the most talented quarterbacks in the history of the NFL suit up in the orange and blue. I witnessed “The Drive,” “The Fumble,” “The Helicopter,” and the glory of back-to-back Super Bowl championships with Elway. I never felt like the Broncos were out of any game (aside from a couple of Super Bowls that will go unmentioned). My dad started getting me into football and I was absolutely mesmerized by what Elway was able to do on the field. I actually fall into the later category as I didn’t become a fan of the NFL or the Broncos until a couple of years after the draft that gave us John Elway. I encourage everyone here at Mile High Report to read the lead-off article today from Aric DiLalla at the Broncos’ official site.įor those of you who witnessed this event, it will bring a great deal of nostalgia.įor those of you who became fans after this move that changed the landscape of the NFL, it is a gem of a story from the history of the NFL. I enjoyed The Stand from start to finish, but never as much as in Even defaced by King's ill-considered 1990 expansion of the novel, which moved its setting from 1980 to 1990, Phipps writes, The Stand is unmistakably "a product of the '70s," suffused with that decade's sense of disintegration and impending doom. A few days later, Keith Phipps, writing for the AV Club, made the same observation about Stephen King's The Stand. Engh's Arslan, I noted how much of its time-the mid-70s-the novel seemed, most particularly in its conviction that America, still reeling from the cultural clashes of the 60s, the Vietnam War, and Watergate, was on the verge of collapse. Equally intriguing in these tales, though, are the little twists of everyday menace that point the characters to their yearnings.
